Piero Silvestrini Biavati: A Journey Dedicated to Gnathology, Posture, and Dental ResearchDr. Piero Silvestrini Biavati, MD, DDS, PhD, is a physician and dental specialist born in Bologna, Italy, on May 3, 1955. He earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Genoa in 1980, with a thesis focused on prosthetic planning for periodontally compromised patients. He became a licensed medical practitioner in 1981 and went on to specialize in Odontostomatology in 1983, graduating with highest honors.
Throughout his career, Dr. Silvestrini Biavati has built extensive experience in prosthodontics and gnathology. He served for many years at the University of Genoa’s Dental Clinic, where he led prosthetic and gnathological departments from 1983 to 1999. He has held multiple academic teaching positions, including courses in dental prosthetics, biomechanics, and gnathological prosthetics, both as a contract professor and visiting lecturer.
In 1996, he earned a PhD in Dentistry with a dissertation on the prevention of dental and orthodontic trauma in children with suspected metabolic imbalances, focusing on gnathological, orthodontic, and electromyographic aspects as early predictors of cranio-mandibular disorders in adulthood.
His education was further enriched by a Master's degree in Posturology from La Sapienza University in Rome (2005), a field he has since actively explored in his clinical and academic work. He has taught internationally, including at Universitat Jaume I in Spain (2018–2025), and has lectured extensively in India and the United Arab Emirates as part of the Indian Dentist Research & Review (IDRR) group.
In 2006, alongside Dr. Fabio Savastano, he co-founded ICNOG – the International College of Neuromuscular Orthodontics and Gnathology, an interdisciplinary organization that promotes the integration of neuromuscular concepts into clinical practice and research across dentistry, orthodontics, and gnathology.
Dr. Silvestrini Biavati is the author or co-author of over 100 scientific publications and has presented at more than 200 national and international conferences. His major written works include several multi-author textbooks on prosthetics, periodontology, and gnathology. His most recent authored work is "Simplified Treatment in Gnathology: The Global Occlusion Method" (EDRA, 2019), also published in Spanish ("Tratamiento Simplificado en Gnatología", Editorial Servet, 2020).
He has made significant contributions to clinical innovation. In 1986, he designed a fully automated device for electroplating and electrobonding metals in adhesive prosthetics. He later developed the “Calottometer” (1988–1995), an articulator-based system for personalized occlusal curve compensation. In 1992, he introduced a diagnostic postural platform (“ScanPosture”) to distinguish between ascending, descending, and mixed syndromes in dental patients. He also designed a novel tooth-implant connection system in 1993, validated through finite element analysis in collaboration with the University of Genoa’s School of Engineering. This groundbreaking work was awarded 2nd place in the 2002 “Premio Duillo” for New Technologies in Dentistry.
In 2002, he launched www.gnatologia.it, a public-access website dedicated to patient education and academic exchange in gnathology. In 2009, he founded Global Occlusion Easy Learning, a nonprofit educational initiative that organizes interdisciplinary courses for dentists, dental technicians, physiotherapists, and optometrists. The initiative also includes a private network for members via www.globalocclusion.com and the discussion group “aspiranti gnatologi.”
In 2022, he released VisualGnathos, a web-based clinical software with integrated statistical tools for gnathological diagnostics and case management: www.visualgnathos.com.
Dr. Silvestrini Biavati also collaborates as a scientific advisor with Atlantotec and AiFiMM, and serves as a moderator on Odontoline, Italy’s leading online dental forum. Since 2007, he has contributed expert content on MediciItalia, a major Italian medical outreach platform.
He is a longstanding member of numerous scientific societies, including:
- ICCMO (International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics) since 1994
- AIG (Italian Gnathology Association)
- ICNOG (International College of Neuromuscular Orthodontics and Gnathology), which he co-founded in 2006
- IAO (International Association for Orthodontics)
